When Michael “Mike” D. Huckabee was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas in 1993, his colleagues didn’t exactly welcome him with open arms.
Huckabee, a Republican, found the door to his office nailed shut from the inside — a loud-and-clear message, he said, courtesy of the state’s largely Democratic legislature.
For 52 days the door remained sealed, and Huckabee was resigned to a makeshift office with borrowed furniture.
It’s been 13 years since then, and Huckabee can laugh about it now. He did just that on Saturday while thanking a room full of Cheshire County Republicans for their warm reception at the Best Western Sovereign Hotel in Keene.
Huckabee, governor of Arkansas since 1996, is considering a presidential run in 2008. His stop in Keene rounded out a four-day trip to the Granite State that’s included visits to Bedford, Concord, Durham, Hollis and Manchester. Read the rest of this entry »
