Presidential candidate brings ideas to Keene

The presidential primary is still more than a year away, but Mike Gravel is already hitting the pavement, spreading the gospel of direct democracy.

The first national figure to file with the Federal Election Commission for the presidency travels with little fanfare. The former Democratic senator from Alaska has no entourage, no one to manage his time, his answers. He was in Keene Tuesday to discuss his campaign.

Gravel is a self-defined idealist-maverick who gained notoriety in the 1970s after he entered into the congressional record 4,100 pages of the top-secret Pentagon Papers.

In 1971, the Nixon administration took the Washington Post and The New York Times to court after they published portions of the 7,000-page, classified history of the lead-up to the Vietnam War. Read the rest of this entry »
