He was 32 when first elected, the son of the former New Hampshire governor who is his namesake.

He was 38 when, following three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, he became the youngest person in the U.S. Senate.

He is 44 now, and after six years in both houses of Congress, Sen. John E. Sununu is seeking six more in the Senate.

Sununu’s challenger is the same person he faced in 2002, Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat from Madbury who served as governor of the Granite State from 1997 to 2003. Sununu defeated Shaheen, 51 percent to 46 percent.

Sununu is six years older, time he says has brought accomplishments and experience. And though he is now the incumbent, the Republican from Waterville Valley says his work on the trail remains the same. Read the rest of this entry »

Three candidates are vying for an elected position that pays $4,000 a year.

It’s not the stipend that has Fred S. Parker, Patricia E. Putnam and incumbent Stuart E. West competing for the treasurer seat, which carries the responsibilities of collecting and depositing funds, paying the bills, balancing the books and preparing annual financial reports for Cheshire County. She’s a familiar face in a familiar race, a woman hoping her rematch will not end as a repeat.

Jeanne Shaheen and John E. Sununu campaigned against each other in 2002, each running for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Sununu, a Republican from Waterville Valley who had previously served six years in the U.S. House of Representatives, defeated Shaheen, 51 percent to 46 percent.

Shaheen, a Democrat from Madbury, finished out her third term as governor of New Hampshire in 2003, leaving Concord after six years in the N.H. Senate and six years as the Granite State’s chief executive.

She remained involved in politics, spending 2004 running John Kerry’s presidential campaign and then taking a job in 2005 as director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School.

She was no longer politicking, however. Read the rest of this entry »

SWANZEY — In this election season, it seems everyone has an opinion — even Fluffy and Fido.

Political advertisements from the Humane Society Legislative Fund, a nonprofit animal protection advocacy group, have ruffled feathers in the Monadnock Region by endorsing Granite State candidates.

The Monadnock Humane Society is not affiliated with the fund, but that hasn’t stopped people from calling, according to Tamala L. Fletcher, director of finance at the humane society in Swanzey. Read the rest of this entry »

Just one year ago, Jennifer M. Horn was a radio talk-show host, a newspaper columnist, a stay-at-home mother whose work allowed her to make breakfast and send her children off to school and then be home when they returned.

She still sets aside time for her family, but so much else has changed in 2008.

Now, when Horn gets behind the microphone, she is answering questions instead of asking them.

Now, when she appears in the newspaper, the articles are about her instead of by her.

Now, when she leaves her Nashua home every morning, she sets off with the goal of earning herself a job in Washington, D.C.

Horn, 44, is the Republican candidate for New Hampshire’s 2nd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, the person Republicans chose over four other options as their pick to challenge Democratic incumbent Paul W. Hodes of Concord.

And in the push to next week’s election, Horn’s campaigning has become a nearly continuous effort. Read the rest of this entry »
